Music and Traditions

I have sadly experienced many funerals in my young age. I have been to mostly family members funerals throughout the years. The hardest funerals i have ever experienced was one for my great grandma, she was a wonderful woman. She made sure you felt loved by her every time you stepped foot through that door. She always gave you undivided attention and always had a compliment to give. She was loved by so many people. Another funeral that was hard was when one of my best friends at the time lost her two-year-old brother. I had been around him his entire life and at the time my own brother was at that age. Funerals are always hard. One song that I have consistently heard at funerals is the song “I’ll Fly Away”.  This is one song I almost always expect to hear at a funeral. This song is almost comforting to hear at the end of a funeral, to me it brings a little bit of joy and happiness to all the sadness and grief you feel during a funeral.

One song I always think about around Christmas time is “Mary Did You Know”. I have grown up in church and this is one song they played almost every Sunday leading up to Christmas. I had heard pastors use this song in their sermons as a reference. It is such a powerful song to hear around Christmas time.  It speaks and is almost asking Jesus’s mother Mary if she realized how important her baby was going to be one day to the world. This song has always been played in churches during the Christmas season. Every time I hear this song, I automatically think of Christmas. It is such a classic Christmas song to me and one that I look forward to hearing every year.

A funny tradition and song I have always heard around Christmas is “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire). This is funny because my Nini (grandma) made this song into a parody after my Papa Chet and her got divorced. She makes sure to change the song lyrics to “Chet’s Nut’s Roasting On An Open Fire”. She has sang it this way to us for year and once you hear it you cannot really unhear it. Every time I hear this Christmas song I cannot help but laugh and think of her. She lives in Florida so every time I hear this song I do feel closer to her in a way.

  1. I would like you to tell your Nini that she holds a very special place in my heart for her parody song; she is a comedic star to me. I also enjoy "Mary Did You Know" from an outside perspective because I'm not religious, but I enjoy the unique POV that this song provides on the story of Christ's birth.

  2. Hey Victoria!! I'm so sorry to hear about your great grandmother and friend's brother. Death is always such a hard thing to handle. I lost my grandma in 2019, and my grandpa a year after that. It was hard for me to fully understand all of it, but I had peace about it that I know the Lord had given me. I still grieved and I still miss them so much, but I know that they are better off now because they're with Jesus. That song "I'll Fly Away" is such a cool song!! I typically hear it at funerals as well, but it does give us hope! I also LOVE the Pentatonix version of "Mary Did You Know?" it's so beautiful. Their voices sound so uniformed and compliment each other so well.
